May 11 May UpdateI've recently discovered the joy of listening to ghazals. A friend recommended Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh, both world famous and beloved singers in South Asia. Ghulam is the modern day guru of ghazals. My first experience was Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa next Yeh Dil, Yeh Pagal Dil Mera, and I fell in love instantly. My search for someone to love nearly as much as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has finally been ended! Ghulam's voice is very rich and soothing. I've memorized some of his songs by now as I did for Kiran Ahluwalia, a contemporary artist in Toronto whose ghazals are the very first I have ever heard and I was privileged to hear them live in concert. Her rendition of Yaar, a heartwrenching poem written by the last Emporer in Delhi who was exiled from India in the 1850s about his longing to see his homeland again before death. My heart ached and I felt moved to tears feeling the pain and desperation of this man's last dying wish. Sigh!! I rely on tranliterations to understand ghazals, it inspires me, I get so excited about ancient words coming alive. Feeling them in the heart, reliving them. The richness of south asian poetry is like a deep ocean with endless possibilities of discovery. I'm enthralled. So now, I am on a mission to find out all I can about ghazal writers and reading transliterations of some of Galib's works. Any online information you may have would be greatly appreciated.
